Vitamins for the eyes will effectively improve your vision

04/10/12 | by admin [mail] | Categories: Announcements [A], Boothe Eye Care

Many of us have problems with vision, which could easily be avoided if we protect our eyes every day by providing the body with essential vitamins. All organs in our body need vitamins for normal functioning, some of which directly affect the quality of vision. For example, the deficit of vitamin A can cause blurred vision, but in excess, which is also unfavorable, it can cause negative effects. For good vision we also need B vitamins, vitamin C, and potassium.

Dr. William Boothe suggests that our eyes need antioxidants - vitamins that neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals. Crystalline lens and the retina are sensitive to dust and other contamination as well as the affects of free radicals and cellular processes. Antioxidant vitamins play an important role in the fight against free radicals. Vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E are antioxidants. These vitamins not only help protect the eyes from free radicals, but also contribute to the preservation of healthy cells and tissues of the eye.

What is necessary for maintaining healthy eyes?

Recent studies show that in addition to vitamins A, C and E to maintain healthy eyes, lutein and zeaxanthin are vital as well. They belong to the carotenoids, which are contained in the retina and lens of the eye. Unique properties of lutein are the resistance to light and the ability to accumulate in the tissues of the eye. Lutein is accumulated in the retina and forms an optical filter that protects the underlying pigment epithelium from the damaging effects of light rays, especially the violet and blue part of the light spectrum.

In addition, lutein is an effective inhibitor of free radicals in the pigment layer of the retina. In the human lens lutein and zeaxanthin are the only carotenoids, and in epithelial-cortical parts of the lens it is contained in two to three times more than in its core. Daily demand is five milligrams of lutein, and one milligram of zeaxanthin, but our diets usually contain less than 20% of normal.

A natural source of vitamins for the eyes are green leafy vegetables like cabbage and sea kale, spinach, kiwi fruit, squash, and pumpkin. However, spinach contains lutein, not only in large quantities, but it is rich in beta-carotene, vitamin C and E and other nutrients that are important to eye health. If your diet cannot provide the body with the necessary quantity of vitamins, you should take supplements of missing vitamins and minerals to maintain vision.

In order to support the body, it is especially useful to have specialized biologically active food additives, which along with vitamin and mineral complex, contain herbs that are useful for the eyes. You should observe the principle of the duration of the reception – enrich your diet with vitamins and minerals almost constantly, with a possible break in the summer months when nutrients can be obtained naturally from foods.

FAQs on IntraLASIK Procedure

What is IntraLasik procedure?

IntraLasik procedure is a bladeless procedure used for the correction of refractive errors. Unlike other laser procedures that use a microkeratome (blade) to create the corneal flap, intraLaSIK procedure uses a laser to create the corneal flap. After creating the corneal flap, an excimer laser is applied to correct the refractive error of the patient.

Explain the working of IntraLASIK procedure?

The IntraLASIK method uses small and rapid laser pulse for the creation of the corneal flap. Microscopic bubbles are formed using the laser pulse at a certain depth within eye which will be decided by Dr. Boothe. Dr. Boothe will move the laser back and forth in the eye to create uniform bubbles beneath the cornea. The corneal flap is then created by separating the layer where the microscopic bubbles are formed. The doctor will then go to the second step of the procedure only after creating the corneal flap.

How can you differentiate between corneal flap created by IntraLASIK method and the flap created by microkeratome?

Microkeratome is a surgical instrument that has a steel blade which is used to cut the corneal flap. The microkeratome is used to make a one-dimensional and single cut of the cornea. The blade may shake when the doctor use the microkeratome resulting in irregular surface of the cornea. This will affect the quality of vision after the surgery. But in IntraLASIK procedure, the laser will create a perfect corneal flap without any irregularities.

What is the success rate of IntraLASIK procedure?

The success rate of the IntraLASIK procedure is very good. In majority of the cases, the patients are achieving 20/20 vision.

Will the outcome of the surgery last longer or not?

IntraLASIK surgery is used to correct the refractive errors of the eye so that the vision will become normal. For those people who are at the age of 40 and above are at the risk of Presbyobia which require spectacles to read. Hence, spectacles are necessary for people who are at their forties. Occurrence of cataract can also change the vision of the people who had undergone IntraLASIK surgical procedure.

Are there any complications in this procedure?

The chances of complications are much lesser when compared to other laser procedures. Dr. Boothe is an expert and experienced LASIK surgeon who can perform the intraLASIK procedure with lesser complications. In some cases, dry eyes, night vision problems and infection may occur.

How much time is required to create the flap using IntraLASIK procedure?

Only 15-20 seconds are required for each eye to create the corneal flap. Altogether, it may take around 10 minutes by including the time taken for the preparation of the surgery.

Is intraLASIK procedure is painful?

Dr. Boothe will apply anesthetic eye drops to reduce the pain during IntraLASIK surgery. After the procedure, the patients may experience light sensitivity, foggy vision and stinging sensation for about 3 to 4 hours. There will be no discomfort after the initial 3 to 4 hours after the surgery.

Are the results of the IntraLASIK permanent?

Yes. The outcomes of the IntraLASIK are permanent. But you can do future corrections for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Presbyopia developed after the age of 40 cannot be treated using IntraLASIK surgical procedure.

LASIK FAQs by Dr. Boothe

08/29/11 | by admin [mail] | Categories: Announcements [A], Boothe Laser Center, Boothe Eye Care

What is LASIK and who can benefit from this procedure?

LASIK is a surgical procedure performed to correct refractive error of the eyes. Individuals suffering from refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism benefit from this surgery.

Who do you consider an ideal candidate for LASIK?

To determine whether you are an ideal candidate, Dr. Boothe will ask you to undergo several tests. After evaluating the results, Dr. William Boothe will be able to decide whether the patient is suffering from myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism or other eye conditions. The extent of your refractive errors will be determined by performing further diagnostic procedures. The best way to know if you will be a good candidate is to perform these thorough tests and see if LASIK will fit your needs.

How much time do you require to complete a LASIK surgery?

Normally, a LASIK surgery by an experienced eye doctor requires five to seven minutes for the completion of the procedure for each eye or about fifteen minutes to complete work on both of the patient’s eyes.

Is LASIK is a lifelong treatment? Will I need to wear reading glasses after LASIK procedure?

LASIK treatment is a permanent treatment for your current refractive errors. Normally, patients who are below the age of 40 can read well without spectacles after the treatment. Patients with more than 40 years of age may require reading glasses because they tend to develop Presbyopia. The LASIK procedure does not treat presbyopia.

How soon after surgery can I go back to work?

Most of the patients can return to their workplace on the very next day. The healing time will vary from one person to another. It is a good idea to maintain some level of flexibility and be allowed to rest for a day or two after LASIK surgery if necessary. Dr. Boothe recommends you to take a leave from work for a couple of days, if possible.

How much time is required to obtain optimal vision after LASIK?

LASIK surgery assures fast recovery of vision. Most of the patients are achieving good vision on the very same day of the surgery or on the next day. Immediately after the surgery, you may feel like you are looking through water. But, within four hours after surgery, your vision will become clearer. During the healing period, it is common that patients experience phases of vision recovery in which their eyesight varies between blurry and clear for some weeks. Vision will improve continuously, but it may take 2-3 months to achieve the best vision, especially for patients with high prescriptions. Patients who had undergone LASIK surgery for hyperopia may have to wait longer to get a clear vision.

Is it possible to achieve 20/20 vision after LASIK surgery?

The outcome of your LASIK surgery depends up on the strength of the patient’s prescription and other associated factors. Most patients without any previous history of eye disease can achieve a vision of 20/40 or even better. More than 50% of the patients will get 20/20 vision or better. Dr. Boothe will usually be able to estimate the probable outcome of your surgery after learning the results of the pre-op tests. You have to know that 20/20 vision achieved through LASIK procedure will feel a bit different from 20/20 vision achieved by corrective lenses.

Is it possible to correct both eyes on the same day?

According to Dr. Boothe, both the eyes can be corrected on the same time. This saves time and also eliminates problems related with period imbalance. Some patients prefer to complete surgery in two steps and this option is valid as well.

What happens when I blink or move my eyes at the time of the surgical procedure?

While doing the procedure, the eyes will be kept opened with the help of an eyelid opener. So, there is no question of blinking or moving of eyes. The laser is under the complete control of the surgeon, and if requires he can stop the surgery until the patient feels comfortable to focus on the fixation light. Special tracking software is installed in advanced laser systems and they correct themselves in real time if involuntary eye movements occur.

What about the safety of the LASIK procedure?

LASIK procedure, if done by an experienced surgeon who uses the most up-to-date machinery, is very safe for patients. Nowadays risks or complications after the procedure are very rare. Again, it is important to remember that LASIK procedure should be performed only by an experienced and skilled surgeon.

Before & After Lasik Surgery

07/15/11 | by admin [mail] | Categories: Announcements [A], Boothe Eye Care

Before undergoing LASIK surgery, patients are often advised to follow a set of pre-operative instructions that will be provided by the doctor who will perform the surgery. Dr. William Boothe explains he will ask for the medical history of each patient - information such as present medications, illness, and allergic reactions to any medications, previous surgeries etc. This will help him to determine whether the patient is a candidate of LASIK eye procedure. If you are recognized as a candidate for LASIK, Dr. Boothe will provide you with specific instructions that have to be followed prior to the surgery. You must follow those instructions to reduce any chance of complications after the LASIK surgery.

Often, Boothe Laser Center will provide you with some of these instructions:
You should not use soft contact lens a couple of weeks prior to surgery because your cornea needs to return to its normal shape. Usage of hard contact lens should be stopped six weeks prior to a LASIK surgery. Patients should not use any kind of creams, lotions or cosmetics on their face as well as eyes. You should also refrain from any kind of eye make-up on the day of your LASIK surgery. Enough rest should be taken before a LASIK surgery. Patients are often asked to arrive to the center one hour before the surgical procedure. Patients can eat light food or drink some fluids before surgery.

On the day of the procedure, you should not use hair products containing alcohol such as hairspray. The outcome of the surgery may be affected by such types of products. Patients are advised to wear comfortable clothes, if possible loose clothing. Arrange a secure transportation from home to the center and back. Driving is not advisable after the surgical procedure. In fact, it not usually recommended to drive for at least three days after a LASIK surgery. Patients are often recommended to take a leave from work at least for four days after the LASIK procedure.

Patients should wear an eye shield (it is transparent) in order to protect the operated cornea from accidental rub or any kind of injury. If you are experiencing any severe pain, please do not wait for your next follow-up appointment with the doctor since it may require the immediate attention of an ophthalmologist.

In most cases, the patient is asked to come in for another appointment with Dr. Boothe within 24-48 hours from the surgical procedure. Patients are usually requested to meet an ophthalmologist at regular intervals for at least six months. Dr. Boothe will ask you to use eye drops to prevent inflammation or infection of the eyes after the LASIK procedure.

Your doctor may also recommend you to use a brand of artificial tears in order to lubricate your eyes, thereby preventing dry eyes. Avoid any kind of activities such as swimming, karate, football, boxing, etc for at least four weeks after the LASIK surgery. Patients are recommended to sleep after the procedure to reduce the possibility of post-operative pain. Never ignore any instructions given by your surgeon, for both pre and post-operative care. Follow the instructions of Dr. Boothe for healthy eyes and quick healing after a LASIK procedure. Surgical complications are rare in LASIK surgery, and can often be prevented by following the guidelines your surgeon will provide you.

Dr William Boothe Changed My Life

My surgery went very well!

All my life I wanted to do laser eye surgery but I was a little scared. Two years ago my friend had an eye correction at the Boothe Eye Care & Laser Center. When she started to see clearly she was very happy. Since then I began thinking about my laser eye surgery. I read many success stories of different kinds of laser surgeries on their websitebut I hesitated because I did not know for how long the surgery will improve my vision. So far my friend has a good vision without any problems.

One evening I called my friend and asked her to go with me to the center. Next morning she called her counselor at the center and made an appointment with Dr. Boothe. When we arrived to Boothe’s Center I was a little excited. My friend took me to Boothe’s room.

I told Dr. Boothe that I wore glasses all of my life and the lately used contact lenses but each year I must switch my contact lenses because my sight changes and it cost a lot overall, with cleaning supplies etc. Dr. Boothe listened to me with attentive attitude and assured me that I can correct my vision without any complications. He asked me to go with his assistant to other rooms where they had examination devices to determine the exact condition of my eyes. It was absolutely painless and quick. His nurse was with me all the time and took me from one exam room to the other. In every room I met very pleasant nurses. They explained what I need to do and which equipment will be used. When the results were ready I waited for Dr. Boothe to was able to speak to me again. He very thoroughly learned my eye exam results and then looked at me and said that I was suitable for IntraLasik surgery. He explained the whole process which will be followed in my surgical procedure. He told me about the advantages of laser eye correction and its disadvantages. I asked how much it will cost and his assistant offered a price and financing plan that suited my expectations. I answered that I will consider and if I agree I will make a call to center. Dr. Boothe said that he will be glad to see me again.

One week later I called the center and the nurse appointed a day for IntraLastik vision correction surgery. My friend told me in detail about the procedure and reassured me that I could not find such a professional surgeon anywhere else in the U.S. When I came to the center I exactly knew what to expect.

Before surgery the nurse gave me papers which I had to sign. I waited about half an hour when the nurse came back and took me to a special room where I was prepared for surgery. I wore the sterile clothing and took a tranquilizing pill. When I was right the nurse took me to operating room. The nurse had me lay down on the operating table so she can put eye drops in my eyes. After about 3 minutes,Dr. Boothe began to operate my right eye. The laser surgery was absolutely painless. It only felt uncomfortable when Dr. Boothe used the eye dilator. The surgery on my right eye only took three minutes. When he worked on my left eye, it was so quick that I did not feel anything. After the surgery, I feel a little dizzy. The nurses took me to the postoperative room and helped me remove the clothing and asked me to rest before Dr. Boothe exams my eyes. I laid down and fell asleep for a couple of hours until the nurse woke me up. To exam my eyes, Dr. Boothe asked me to read the letters on the letter board. I was able to read 10 lines and it was great! The nurse gave me eye drops and a prescription and I was allowed to back home.

Before the surgery, I was afraid that there will be postoperative complications, but when I returned home I felt well! My friend visited me and helped me put eye drops in my eyes.

During the next day, I went back to Dr. Boothe so he can exam and test my eyes again. I was delighted when Dr. Boothe said I have 20/20 vision. The only regret I have is that I waited so long to get this done!

Seeing without contacts

How often we don’t appreciate what we have, for example when it comes to having a good vision. I understood it after my eyesight deteriorated when I was 55 years old. I disliked wearing glasses and about 2 years wore contact lenses. With them, my eyes tired very quickly and I could not read for long periods of time. It upset me , especially when I recalled the times when I could see with my natural eyes.

My children advised me to try to improve my eyesight with laser correction. The first time I visited Boothe Laser Center they had to persuade me that this is not risky procedure. The service was wonderful, everything is clean and tidy, the nurses very attentive and polite. I was approved for IntraLasik procedure by Dr. William Boothe.

I realized that eye surgery is important for me and my children supported my decision. Before surgery I had 5.75 sight in the right eye and 5.15 in the left one. Before the main surgery I had laser coagulation of the retina. After the laser eye surgery I was afraid to open my eyes. But when I opened them my joy was boundless. Already in the same evening I could test my new vision. My pleasure is measured very simply – 20/20 vision!

Thank You Boothe Eyecare

Dr. Boothe is the obvious choice.

I went to have my eyes done at Boothe eyecare and I am happy that I was treated by Dr. Boothe and not by any other doctor.

I tried to learn as much as possible about laser eye surgery before deciding to visit Dr. Boothe. One of the things I kept reading about was that good outcomes would be effected by the surgeon’s skills. From Dr. Boothe’s website I knew that he had performed more eye surgeries than anyone else in the area and was highly regarded by other surgeons. This expert opinion in the ophthalmology field made Dr. Boothe the obvious choice.

My surgery itself was quick and painless. After the surgery I was treated by the nurses and assistant crew who were all charming. Now in both eyes I have 20/20 vision. This has been a blessing, I feel more confident and recently my boyfriend has asked me to marry him! Thank you Dr. Boothe!
